The legend of Zeniarai Benzaiten and Yoritomo Minamoto

According to legend, the first Minamoto shogun, Yoritomo Minamoto saw a peculiar dream in 1185. It happened to be year of the snake, as well as the month of the snake, and the day of the snake. In his dream, he was told that if he were to use spring water from an enchanted land in the northwest in a ceremony for the spirits and Buddha, the whole country would be at peace.  So, he searched for the spring, and, after finding it, enshrined a deity. This is said to be the beginning of Zeniarai. After holding a memorial service for deities and Buddha using this spring water, the whole country returned to peace and even citizens lived fulfilling lives.

One of the 5 sources for good-quality spring water in Kamakura

One of the 5 sources for good-quality spring water in Kamakura

People started to believe at some point in history that washing your money with the water in this spring brings you more money.  However, the original meaning of washing money with this spring water was once equal to purifying your body and soul, to bring happiness and prosperity. The god Ugafuku, the enshrined deity of Zeniarai Benzeitenn, is a water deity with the body of a snake and the head of a human. Therefore, it is believed that the day of the snake is more miraculous, bringing many people even from far away to visit the shrine. This spring water was chosen as one of the five forces for good-quality spring water in Kamakura in the Shinpen Kamakurashi (A Topography of Kamakura), which Mitsukuni Tokugawa ordered his vassals to write.

There is a basket and ladle for visitors to use. Put money in the basket and pour water over the money in the basket with the ladle.  Dry the money naturally, then be sure to use the money that was washed. As the saying suggests, “Money comes and goes.” The logic behind this practice is that spending the money will benefit the recipient and will eventually benefit you as well.
